Safeguarding children online

12 Mar 2026

Keeping children safe online is important because the internet and apps expose them to risks they may not yet understand. Parents play a key role in guiding and protecting them while they learn to use technology responsibly. 📱🛡️
We hope the following information is useful for parents:

Why it’s important for parents to help keep children safe online
  • Protection from inappropriate content
Children can easily come across violent, sexual, or harmful material online.

  • Preventing cyberbullying
Online bullying through social media, games, or messaging apps can seriously affect a child’s mental health.

  • Avoiding online predators
Some people pretend to be children online to gain trust and exploit young users.

  • Protecting personal information
Children may not realise the dangers of sharing their name, location, school, or photos.

  • Developing healthy screen habits
Parental guidance helps children balance screen time with school, sleep, and real-life activities.

  • Learning responsible digital behaviour
Parents can teach children how to communicate respectfully and safely online.

General age guidelines for online safety tools
Age        Parental approach
3–5 years            Use devices with parents present. Use device-level restrictions.
6–9 years            Strong parental controls and screen-time limits. Teach basic online safety.
10–12 years       Monitoring apps + discussions about social media and privacy.
13–15 years       More independence but with monitoring and clear rules.
16–17 years       Focus more on trust, guidance, and responsible behaviour rather than strict controls.

✅ Important: Safety apps help, but regular conversations between parents and children are the most effective protection. Kids should feel comfortable telling parents if something online makes them uncomfortable.
