Weekly Update 14.11.25

14 Nov 2025

We believe that our children should have the aspiration and opportunity to ‘Live life in all its fullness’ and ‘Shine like stars in the sky’.

New this week…

Spotlights from Learning…

In Rocket Class this week, the KS1 children planned and carried out a scientific enquiry: 'Do older children have longer hair?'
The EYFS children have enjoyed looking at dinosaur non-fiction books and making 'dinosaur world' with the construction.  I wonder how many dinosaurs you can name?

In Comet Class, we have finished our biography about Grace Darling.  We have really enjoyed writing about the ‘Star of the Seas’!  I wonder which alliterative title you would use for yourself if you were to write an autobiography?  In our PSHE about relationships, we have been discussing ways to resolve conflicts.  ‘Conflict’ was an unfamiliar word for us.  Maybe have a go at writing a definition for this week’s Word of the Week task?

This week in Asteroid Class we have been designing our frame structure in DT - having made prototypes out of toothpicks and playdoh last week. The children loved seeing what 3D shapes were the most stable and how many layers they could build without it falling down.  Do you know what a pavilion is and where you might see one?

Also this week...

Many thanks for all your donations towards the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal… and thank you to the School Council who have organised the collection for this each day.  The children have explored what the poppy means to them in Collective Worship this week before coming together to commemorate Remembrance Day with a minute’s silence on Tuesday.

It has been a busy week with visitors.  Miss Oates and Mrs Pawson have both been across from Kirkby Malzeard to talk to the children about their learning in Maths and Reading respectively.  On Wednesday, we welcomed Reverend Jane who joined us for lunch and Collective Worship.  Our regular volunteers Mrs Buckham-Bonnett and ‘Library Mrs Taylor’ have both been in as usual to support the children with their reading.

WORD OF THE WEEK

To help children develop their vocabulary and a love of words, a focus ‘word of the week’ is introduced each week for the children to investigate.  This week’s word is:

The children are encouraged to find out what the word means and perhaps use it in a sentence or explore its etymology.  Their efforts are then displayed in the hall.  Although aimed more at the KS2 children, everyone is welcome to join in.

Coming Up TODAY…

CHILDREN IN NEED - Challenge Yourself to 25!
Just a reminder that everyone is invited to come to school today in ‘sports gear’ ready to take part in some special fitness challenges put together by Joe Wicks.  We also invite those who would like to donate to bring in some loose change which we can use to create a huge 25 from coins!

Coming up...

CRUCIAL CREW
On Monday, Y6 will be joining children from other schools at Carlton Lodge to take part in this year’s Crucial Crew. They will be learning about topics like online safety, fire safety and crime prevention through a series of workshops. This multi-agency event is organized by the police and supported by services like the fire and transport police to help children make informed decisions as they transition to secondary school.

Y6 will be having an early lunch in class before getting on the bus at 12 noon with Year 6 Kirkby Malzeard children.  Mrs Cornforth will be attending with them.  They will be in workshops for the afternoon, leaving at 3pm to return to school – hopefully - by the end of the school day.

THEATRE VISITS
We have been lucky enough to reserve seats for a theatre trip for all children in school. We would like to take:

Reception, Year One and Year Two children to see ‘Stickman’ at Leeds Playhouse on Friday 12th December during the afternoon, arriving back to school at around 4pm.

Year Three, Four, Five and Six children to see ‘A Christmas Carol’ at Leeds Playhouse on Wednesday 7th January 2026 for an evening performance we will leave school at 3pm arriving back to school around 9.20pm.

The cost of both trips is £16.00 per child and we ask parents to support us by making a voluntary contribution of this amount.  Whilst these payments are voluntary, parents should be aware that due to the school budget, this trip will only go ahead if we receive enough payments to cover the cost of the trip. We are really grateful to the Friends PTA group whose fundraising efforts are subsidising the cost of both trips. This is an exciting opportunity for our children and supports our enrichment curriculum offer as well as enhancing our learning within school.  Details about what to wear, picnic lunch/tea etc will follow nearer to the time.We thank you for your support in helping us to ensure we can keep our curriculum as hands on and exciting as possible.

Many thanks to all those who have already responded.  Please can any further consent replies be received by Monday 17th November - please click and respond to the email sent last Friday.  Payments have now been loaded onto ParentPay.

SAVE THE DATE!
Mrs Harris would like to invite parents to come and join us for a Musical Showcase on Friday November 21st, 2.45-3.15pm. Children learning instruments in school will have a chance to perform and the whole school will sing some of the songs we've been enjoying in our singing assembly time.
