Weekly Update 5.09.25

05 Sep 2025

We believe that our children should have the aspiration and opportunity to ‘Live life in all its fullness’ and ‘Shine like stars in the sky’.

WELCOME BACK
What a great start to the new school year!  It has been lovely to welcome the children back to school and catch up with all their news.  A particularly warm welcome goes out to those who are new to our school community, including Mrs Phillips who will be teaching the KS2 children on Fridays and Mrs Fisher who is supporting with admin work in the school office.  We are all excited for the adventures that lie ahead, especially our KS2 residential at Bewerley Park the week after next (see below)!

Reminders

SMART AND READY
It has been fantastic to see how smart everyone has looked on their return to school.  Many thanks for all your efforts in providing uniform and school shoes ready for the year ahead.  Expectations around uniform can be found on our school website if you have any queries.
Just a reminder that no nail polish or jewellery should be worn at school, except for small stud earrings for those with pierced ears.  Should your child be considering having their ears pierced in the future, we kindly request that they wait until July to allow for the 6 weeks healing time as ALL earrings must be removed for PE for health and safety reasons.  It is really helpful if earrings can be left at home on PE days to avoid any issues with removing or storing them.  We also request that longer hair is tied back throughout the day.

BIKEABILITY
Year 6 Bikeability cycling proficiency training will take place next WEDNESDAY 10th September. Please can you make sure (if your child is in Year 6) that they bring a road worthy bike to school and bike helmet so they can complete their Bikeability course.   Please check brakes, tyres and that the seat is at a suitable height. If you have not already done so, please return the consent form by Monday.

BEWERLEY PARK
Many thanks to all those who attended the KS2 residential information meeting after school on Wednesday. As promised, Mrs Taylor has added all the information you will need to the website here:
St Nicholas Church of England Primary School

Just to recap:
Please ensure you read all the allergen information carefully.

Please can all medical forms be in school for Friday 5th September LATEST.

Please ensure you have completed a consent to administer medications form and have returned this to school along with any medication your child needs by Friday 12th September LATEST.

Please send any money for the trip in an named envelope to school by Friday 12th September LATEST.

If you wish to take your child to the local secondary school tours planned for Thursday 18th September, you should notify Mrs Taylor by Tuesday 9th September and collect your child at 1pm or 5.30pm from the centre on the day. We cannot guarantee if they attend the afternoon activities that they will be back to the site until 5.30pm.

MSA ROLE
We still have a vacancy for a Mealtime Supervisor for the coming academic year.  This role would suit someone in the community who is looking for some part-time work in a school environment. For more information, please email admin@west-tanfield.n-yorks.sch.uk or give us a call on 01677 470329.  Please spread the word.

CLUBS and WRAPAROUND CARE
Just a reminder that booking forms for Breakfast Club and after-school childcare can be found on our school website under the Parents tab.  Click below to access:
St Nicholas Church of England Primary School
Mrs Court will be running a Netball Club on Tuesdays for children in Y3 and above only.  Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis.  Mrs Cornforth will supervise the younger children who access wraparound care on that day.

WORD OF THE WEEK
To help children develop their vocabulary and a love of words, a focus ‘word of the week’ is introduced each week for the children to investigate.  This week’s word is:

The children are encouraged to find out what the word means and perhaps use it in a sentence or explore its etymology.  Their efforts are then displayed in the hall.  Although aimed more at the KS2 children, everyone is welcome to join in.

MUSIC TUITION with MRS HARRIS
There are a couple of spaces left for children wishing to learn instruments in school. If any new children would like to start lessons on piano (from Y2), ukulele, recorder or singing, please email Mrs Harris directly on bryonyharris1@gmail.com

NY MUSIC TUITION
Just a reminder that small group or individual tuition is available via the North Yorkshire Music Service. Click on the link below for further information:

Safeguarding, Health and Wellbeing Updates…
Are you a parent or family member with concerns about someone's gaming? Is it having a negative impact on their studies, family time, going out, other hobbies?
Like most activities, gaming can be a great way to relax, destress and socialise. However, for a minority of people excessive gaming can have a negative impact both on them and those around them.  Click on the link below for information and support:
